Meet Sabine from Switzerland
So, what made you want to come to England to study English?
I wanted to learn English for my work as a nurse and for my hobbies, which are sailing and rowing. I go to other countries to do rowing and sailing and I English is the language everyone speaks.
I also want to work on the Mercy Ship, which is a big boat that is a hospital that goes to places like Africa.
I am studying in England because I want to be around English people and immersed in the culture.
Was England as you expected?
I was surprised by the traffic! There are so many cars and in England, cars have the priority, where in Switzerland, pedestrians have the priority. I struggled with this.
I was pleased that English people seem to be very happy to have foreigners in their towns.
England is a beautiful place and CELC was great. My friend came to CELC last year and told me CELC was great and I wasn’t disappointed.
How was your experience of living with an English family?
My host was very, very good. She opened her house and I was like in my own home. She cooks really well, so I don’t eat only fish and chips! I met her parents and they treated me like part of the family; it was very nice. She showed me many places and we went to Christchurch Music Festival. It was good to be with English people and not just students.
What’s the most memorable moment of your time here in England?
I have many good memories, but I really enjoyed the Purbeck tour and the trip to Bath. I also caught a fish and then we ate it, it was amazing.
I have also had a great opportunity to be included in Christchurch Rowing Club. I have been rowing once a week with the team and I was very happy to practice my sport and learn the vocabulary related to it. I also sailed on the sea in a wooden boat that was made by its owner, it was very good.
In the 3 months I have been here, there are many more things I could tell you, but it would take too long!
Is there anything you’d like to warn other students who are thinking of coming to England about?
It was very difficult for me when some students kept on speaking in their own language. If you come to England to learn English, you should try to speak English all of the time, then you will learn more.
