Meet Nicholas ‘Nico’ Raviotta from Italy

So, what made you want to come to England to study English?
I would like to improve my English to find a better job in Italy and because I would like to speak with people in different countries to understand other cultures. I think if you want to study English, you need to be in a country where it is the first language. You can study English in your country, but it’s not the same because at home you only use it in class, but in England you have to speak it all the time.

Was England as you expected?
More or less I expected this kind of weather! I thought the culture would be like mine, but it isn’t it is very different; the people are nice and they always say sorry, for example if you walk into someone by accident, they say sorry all the time.

When I was in London, I was lost and someone who saw that I was lost came to me and offered to help with directions. I was surprised – that was a nice thing to do because we were really lost.

How was your experience of living with an English family?
Before I arrived here, I was scared because I never met the family and I didn’t know what they were like, but I have a beautiful host family. I have a good feeling and they help me a lot with my English – they correct me when I say the wrong sentences, and we speak a lot and they help me with any problems that I have. They are like my second family now.

What’s the most memorable moment of your time here in England?
Our first trip together was to Portsmouth. We were all new students and it was a special time to get to know each other.

Is there anything you’d like to warn other students that are thinking of coming to England about?
The culture is different but I think it is good to challenge yourself. It is not easy to step out of your routine. One thing you need to be very careful with is crossing the road – in Italy you look left when you cross the road; in England you must look right because they drive on the wrong side of the road!

There is a good feeling at the school and the teachers are very helpful and are happy to answer our questions.
