Meet Esther from Switzerland

So, what made you want to come to England to study English?
This is my seventh or eighth time here at CELC!  I keep coming back because it is my favourite holiday! Sometimes I like to come with different people and sometimes I like to come alone. This time I came here with my friend Simone. It’s also a great opportunity to improve my English. I first came here when I was 48 and learning English was something I’d always wanted to do. Time flies! The plan was to for two weeks every year (I haven’t quite managed that!). It’s always interesting to meet people from around the world. You just have to come here and you get the experience of coming into contact with many different cultures.
For me, coming to England is the best way to study English. I tried going to an evening class back in Switzerland, but being immersed in the language is the best way to learn.

Was England as you expected?
England has always been better than I expected. I always come home from classes feeling relaxed. The people are more relaxed. The area here is beautiful, with the sea and mild climate.

How was your experience of living with an English family?
I’ve lived with four different host families during my stays here. The last two host families were particularly helpful. At my age I could look after myself, but I prefer to live with a host family because it is good for improving my English and asking questions.

What’s the most memorable moment of your time here in England?
My first time here, because I remember everything so clearly with my first teacher and class. Every time I come here I feel like I’m coming back home.

Is there anything you’d like to warn other students who are thinking of coming to England about?
You should really make sure that you speak to each other (other students) in English while you’re here so you will improve!

Anything else you would like to tell us?
I would really like to recommend this school to people in my age-group and even older, because people my age often like to travel around and they can improve their English. It’s not an expensive holiday if you’re coming from Switzerland because you can get cheap flights, you can get here very fast. Everything is provided – the homestay and the food.
I really enjoy the trips here. You learn a lot about the culture and the country on the trips here.
