Hosting Students

Interested in Hosting a Foreign Student?
It is very important to us at CELC that all our students are given a warm welcome with a Christian family. If you think you are able to meet the criteria below and wish to have students  please contact the Centre.

Your Paying Guests

We believe that our accommodation, as a Christian Language Centre, is a vitally important factor, a factor that contributes toward the success of any English Language Course. Students can derive a great benefit from being in an English family which is committed to Christ and to Kingdom principles (yes we all have bad days!).

We choose our families from those who are, a) committed Christians, b) people who have time for students and who can offer quality accommodation in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere; we expect our hosts to be interested in their students.

Essential Information
Room

The student’s room must be adequately furnished, with space for a reasonable amount of clothing (they could be with you for some time). There must be sufficient light (we do not accept basements as being adequate), a bedside lamp, a mirror; there must also be a desk or small table for writing, and a comfortable chair. Ideally, there should be no more than four students in a family. The Centre will endeavour not to allocate students of the same language group, as this can be a negative factor for student’s language learning potential.

In order to keep up-to-date with you and to update our records, we will need to pay you an annual visit.

Meals

All meals, with the exception of breakfast, when the family may be busy and therefore unable to sit down for breakfast with their guests, must be taken with the hostess and those members of the family who may be present. We do expect students to eat their evening meals and weekend meals with their hosts. Students must not be given their meals separately. Students must be provided with breakfast (minimum cereal, toast, tea/coffee) and a cooked (minimum two-course) evening meal seven days a week.

During the weekends students must be provided with lunch - this could take the form of a packed lunch - if requested. There will be occasions, usually due to a school excursion, when students ask for a packed lunch - students will, of course, be expected to give sufficient notice.

Bathroom
A daily bath or shower must be available to students - however, students will not be unreasonable with their ‘ablutionary needs’.

Laundry
The Centre does not expect host families to wash student’s clothes, although some may wish to do so - if so the arrangement will be strictly between host family and student. Naturally students will need to do some washing ‘at home’. However, the bulk of their washing will, of necessity, be done, at a launderette - they will, of course, need to be pointed in the direction of the nearest launderette.

Key
All students should be issued with a house key. Students should be given reasonable freedom of access.

Heating
Most students are accustomed to ‘adequate heating’ in their homes, and will therefore, of necessity, need a room where they can study in comfort. Please be vigilant - make sure they are warm enough; it’s not really good enough to request that they put on more clothing - although this may help.

Change of Circumstances
Please advise the Centre immediately of any changes in your family circumstances -please do not ‘struggle on’.

Bookings / Dates / Arrivals

Students are asked to arrive on the Saturday or Sunday prior to the commencement of courses. Most students travel individually without giving the Centre any information. The Centre, however, always requests that students contact their host families, giving them their estimated time of arrival. It is possible that your student may arrive late - please be patient with them; there may be a number of reasons for their late arrival - hopefully they will contact you.

On occasions, students do fail to arrive; these occasions are rare; in the event of such an occurrence the Centre will endeavour to provide you with another student - this cannot be guaranteed. Moreover, the Centre cannot accept financial responsibility.

Early Departures

Host families should inform the Centre if a student has given notice or if the student has been given notice to leave.

Should the student, for whatever reason, have to leave prior to the agreed date, either the student or host family should give one week's notice of termination - this would be from the Saturday.

Rights to give notice
Either the student or host family may give one week’s notice of termination - from Saturday.

School Hours

Please ensure that your student is at the Centre by 0855 on the first day of his/her course, and please make sure that they know how to get to the Centre - they would really appreciate some extra ‘TLC’ during their first few days in this area.

The school offers a comprehensive programme, so it is possible that your student will be out of the house until after 1600. however, there may be times when your student chooses not to participate in an afternoon activity. Students therefore may return home anytime after 1250.

Breakages & Damages / Insurance
The Centre cannot accept responsibility for any breakage or damage caused by any student. You must arrange adequate insurance to cover any possible damage.

Visitors Book
Any paying guest is required by law to enter the following information in a visitors’ book:

Name, home address and telephone number, their passport number and alien’s number (where applicable) - they should also write down their date of arrival, car registration (where applicable). Students are also required to leave a forwarding address.

'Problem' Procedures
  • Talk about it - to the student(s)
  • Pray about the problem (together if possible)
  • Allow some time for a resolution
  • Call Jackie on 473400

Care of Juniors

We occasionally accept juniors (students under the age of 16). In order to comply with the terms of the Children's Act 1989 we may therefore ask host families to provide references and for permission to do police checks on adults living in the home.

‘And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.’
(1 Corinthians 13:13)
