CELC Director, Steve King, finally got his wish to take a group of students to enjoy the dramatic beauty of one of England's wilder places - Dartmoor.
We hiked to Haytor and Saddletor, clambered on the rocks and got our feet wet in the bogs. The views are stunning and the air so fresh. We then visited the famous ancient village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor to look at the church, visit the craft fair and other shops, and learn about Widecombe Fair, and Uncle Tom Cobbly-and-all! Then off to Dartmeet to jump from rock to rock without slipping into the river. Alex collected a little bruise and several others managed to test the water!
A photocall with the cutest Dartmoor ponies was a welcome stop-off on the way to Chagford and a traditional English cream tea. Of course, students needed to be taught the very proper way of preparing, eating and drinking - slightly crooked little finger when raising one's teacup to one's mouth, etc! And what a lot of clotted cream we manged to pile onto the scones!
We visited Drago Castle and enjoyed the wonderful views back over the moor before driving home. One student described Dartmoor as being "like a trip to Heaven"!
